Butterflies Posted by: Sage Simmons

So..... As you all know I haven't posted in ages.... I am sorry. I think I recall last Friday I went on a field trip to the butterfly museum in Thanksgiving Point. It is such a beautiful place... There is a conservatory for all of the butterflies... Its one of the best in my eyes. And yet super humid :\ . My hair got twice as frizzy as it normally does.... but it was worth the bad looking hair to see magnificent creatures. They are delicate and beautiful. You would never imagine that once that beautiful butterfly was once a gross disgusting fat little grub like caterpillar. One of my favorites is not the common Monarch,  although that one is my second.... I love the blue ones. They are reflective and shiny. Like a jewel. But let me tell you something I learned going there.... They really aren't the color blue... they are the color black. Wonderful right? But when the sunlight hits the butterflies' wings when they are outstretched it looks like the color blue. I learned that and couldn't believe that my favorite kind of butterfly was really black not blue! But that didn't matter.... although it not being blue I thought it so wonderful and interesting that it looked that way. That day some butterflies did die... sadly... but the thing is is we were able to touch them when they were dead. And I learned that they have a dust like powder on their wings that makes the color. Remarkable! I thought they just kind of had them magically... This shows that I don't know a lot about butterflies as I thought I did... also another thing... I stood there for hours patently waiting for a butterfly to land on me... I stood quietly and still. But no butterfly landed for a full minute. They flew around me but didn't land. One landed on my shoulder for a second then flew away. Another landed on my head a few times but only for two seconds. Another landed on my shoulder and another landed in the palm of my hand.... but only for a second. When I came over to my sister, however, she sat there and lots of butterflies would rest on her for three minutes. And once one flew off another came right away. I sat next to her and did the same thing. But no butterflies cared about me.... they only wanted to land on my sister. I did feel sad but not mad and I didn't want to force any of these little creatures. So I sat calmly waiting. Finally it was almost time to leave. My sister really wanted to have me hold one so we talked to an employee and they said and taught me how to get them on your finger without hurting them. So I tried it... It worked! And I didn't harm the little ones at all! I am a very gentle and respectful person... so of course I was able to hold one. carefully though.
